Lopet For Change Project
Introduction
The Lopet for Change Project was implemented in January 2023. It is an extention of two previous projects:- Kasei for Change I and Kasei for Change II in the area of Kasei ward in West Pokot County. Lopet for Change is therefore a response to the assessment outcomes from Kasei for Change I and II project, which was implemented from July 2019 to Decemebr 2020 and got a high approval rate from the community as a project which focused in community needs and offered a sustainable aproaches to community ownership.
The project targeted women and girls as primary target group because they lack opportunities to exercise their democratic rights as far as reproductive health is concerned. The men being head of the families and key decision makers, were also included in the project to enable men support the change process. The key project advocacy areas included issues related to Female Genital Mutilation, teenage pregnancies, child marriages and girls education, the rights of women to access reproductive health services as well as increasing women rights to have a voice and participate in community development.
In Lopet area, women cannot take decisions regarding their own reproductive health, girls are forced to marry at an early age; mostly as second wives and are subjected to female genital mutilation – this is gross violation of their right. Men uphold these traditional values which deny women their rights and therefore the need of community sensitization and advocacy, driven by the local members of the community after undergoing various sensitization and training programs as outlined in the project design.
Objective
The goal of the project was to empower women in Lopet locations to understand and exercise their human rights in making decisions concerning their reproductive health.
