In Wasat village, on the 6th of February 2026, the day began unlike any other. The community awoke to vibrant music echoing through the village as speakers mounted atop a jeep carried a powerful message far and wide:

“The Wasat community, come out today in large numbers and join the world in celebrating zero tolerance to female genital mutilation”.

Responding to the call, men, women, and youth gathered in great numbers, united in purpose and hope.

“This is a day of gratitude for us as a community,” said the area chief, Chief Lomwai. “We celebrate the efforts made by the Wasat for Change Group in ending female genital mutilation.”

He further acknowledged the support that made this transformation possible:

“This progress has been made possible through funding from the Inner Wheel Club of Sweden. Today, we proudly celebrate zero reported cases of female genital mutilation, increased uptake of family planning, higher enrolment of girls in secondary schools, and a significant reduction in child marriage.”

Speaker after speaker echoed similar sentiments, highlighting how the project’s simple yet powerful message has brought lasting transformation to the community.

The event was also graced by two Swedish professionals—a doctor and a midwife—who are working in the region and supporting local health initiatives.

Members of the Wasat for Change Group encouraged the community to continue building on these gains, emphasizing the importance of expanding democratic space for women. They called on all stakeholders to support women’s voices and leadership, ensuring the community fully benefits from the progress achieved. This celebration was not just a milestone—it was a testament to what collective effort, partnership, and commitment to change can achieve.
